Miss Scarlet & the Duke returns for season 2 in 2022

When Miss Scarlet & the Duke premiered in 2020, it was to big viewing numbers and somewhat mixed reviews. Some loved the light mystery, interesting cinematography, and general playfulness of the series. Others were dismayed at the silliness and anachronisms, too distracted to settle in and enjoy the mysteries.

In spite of the handful of naysayers, the series pleased enough people that it was renewed for a second season. Season 2 of Miss Scarlet & the Duke will premiere later this year.

What is Miss Scarlet & the Duke About?

Eliza and “The Duke”

With only one season under its belt, we imagine it will still be unfamiliar to many of the more casual fans of British TV and period dramas.

The series begins when Eliza Scarlet's (Kate Phillips) father dies and she learns she's penniless. Given the circumstances, she's quickly forced to find her own way in the world. Unfortunately, that world is Victorian London, a place where women were looked down upon as inferior and generally incapable creatures.

Instead of leveraging her looks to marry the first wealthy man to cross her path, Miss Scarlet instead uses her talents and relationships to build a successful private detective practice. Along the way, she competes and occasionally partners with a long-time friend of the family, a police detective called The Duke (Stuart Martin).

Miss Scarlet & the Duke is unusual in that the series was a co-production between PBS and Alibi, as opposed to the more typical PBS partnerships with the BBC, ITV, or Channel 4. Alibi is a pay channel in the UK, and they're more popular for offering second run showings of BBC and ITV shows than for anything they've made on their own. Of course, we're happy to see ANY investment in more content from the UK and/or Ireland.

What's Happening in Season 2 of Miss Scarlet & the Duke?

Will they? Won't they? Who knows what's coming in season 2…

Though few details have been released so far, we can probably expect to see Eliza making progress in her business – and hopefully becoming a little more secure in her new vocation. The trailer for season 2 has suggested at least one storyline involving bodysnatchers, along with plenty of wildly inappropriate (for the time period) daring and flirtatious behaviour from Miss Scarlet.

In a recent interview, star Kate Phillips mentioned she enjoys doing stunts and action scenes, and that she spoke with producers about adding more of them – so that could mean a more fast-paced second season.

Based on the first season and overall tone of the series, it's probably safe to bet more romance – or teased romance – will be in store for the next season. It's hard to say how long they'll want to drag out the tension between Miss Scarlet & the Duke, but we can't imagine it ending without some kind of satisfying conclusion in their relationship.

When Does Season 2 of Miss Scarlet & the Duke Premiere?

In the US, the official PBS/PBS Masterpiece premiere date has been set for Sunday, October 16th at 8/7c.

We haven't seen a premiere date listed for Alibi in the UK, but we doubt the dates will be too far apart.

Will There Be a Season 3 of Miss Scarlet & the Duke?

Miss Scarlet & the Duke (Season 1)

So far, there's no word on season 3 of Miss Scarlet of the Duke – but if we see a casting notice or get official confirmation, we'll update this post to reflect any new details. Assuming viewing figures are anything like they were for the first season, renewal for a third season seems likely.

Was Miss Scarlet & the Duke Based on a Book?

Though a large percentage of British TV mysteries are based on books, this one is an original. Miss Scarlet & the Duke was created for television by Rachael New. It's said that in creating Eliza's character, she took inspiration from Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennett (Pride & Prejudice) and Margaret Mitchell's Scarlett O'Hara (Gone with the Wind).
