Roger Allam and Shaun Evans in Season 6 of Endeavour

It seems like ages since Season 6 of Endeavour aired, but we have loads of good news about the future of this delightful Oxford-based mystery series. Not only is Season 7 coming to the US soon, but they've officially renewed for an eighth season! It's great to know that not only is the next season well underway, but we can delay our final goodbyes until at least 2021.

Endeavour Series 7 Production

Back in 2019, the folks behind Endeavour released a photo of a cast readthrough script for the seventh series of Endeavour. As with all the previous episodes of Endeavour, we can see that Russell Lewis is behind this one, too. Lewis is a veteran screenwriter who also did some episodes of Inspector Morse, Kavanagh QC, Lewis, and Cadfael, so it's safe to say the man knows his way around both mysteries and the Morse-universe – or is that unimorse?

Interestingly, Lewis was also a child actor who appeared in The Looking Glass War, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and Young Winston, along with the British kids' classic The Kids from 47A

The seventh series begins on New Year's Eve in 1970, ushering in a new decade. The Castle Gate CID team (where Morse is now working) is called onto the scene when a body is discovered on a canal towpath. The only clue they have is a witness who heard someone whistling.  Great Canal Journeys, this is not.

Is it just me, or is Endeavour Morse channeling a bit of James Bond in this one?

When Does Season 7 of Endeavour Premiere?

Series 7 premiered on the 9th of February, 2020, in the UK. Episode 2 airs on the 15th, and episode 3 airs on the 23rd. There will only be 3 episodes in Season 7.

For the US, it's likely the new season will be available on your local PBS station on the 9th of August, and likely on PBS Masterpiece the next day (as with most PBS Masterpiece titles).

You can currently catch up with Series 1-6 HERE

Who's Returning for Season 7 of Endeavour?

Endeavour Season 7

We know for certain that Shaun Evans is returning as DS Morse. The mustache will not be reprising its role.

Also returning are cast members Roger Allam (Detective Chief Inspector Fred Thursday), Anton Lesser (Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright), Sean Rigby (Detective Sergeant Jim Strange), James Bradshaw (Dr. Max DeBryn), Abigail Thaw (Dorothea Frazil), Caroline O’Neill (Win Thursday) and Sara Vickers (Joan Thursday).

Endeavour is Confirmed for Season 8

Last year, ITV officially confirmed that Endeavour will return for an eighth season. This is a particularly interesting development because people have been speculating for a while about whether there would be another.

Writer Russell Lewis specifically alluded to some events that occur later than 1970, saying “We’re thrilled ITV has asked #TeamEndeavour to continue to add to the Casebook of Colin Dexter’s immortal creation, and take E. Morse and Oxford’s Finest into a new decade of decimalisation, package holidays, the Oil Crisis, Blackouts, Three Day Weeks, and Europa Endlos.”

His comments made a lot of people wonder if there would be more than just Season 7 – but at the same time, fans of the original Inspector Morse and its spinoff, Lewis, will know that Lewis was stopped when it reached the same number of episodes as Inspector Morse. Both had just 33 episodes. By the end of Series 6, Endeavour had racked up 26 episodes and a TV movie.

Series 7 is said to have 3 episodes, which would put the total count up to 30. Will the eighth season be another short one, with just 3 episodes? Or will Endeavour continue on and rack up more total episodes than its predecessors? It remains to be seen…

Will You Watch Season 7 of Endeavour?

I know some fans have soured on the show since it turned a bit darker in recent seasons. Will you continue to watch when Season 7 is released next year? Or are you ready to leave Oxford after so many years of great mystery?
