Shaun Evans in Endeavour, Season 6

It seems like it wasn't all that long ago that Season 5 of Endeavour became widely available for US viewing, so we were very excited to learn Season 6 is also now beginning to air.

Where to Watch Endeavour, Season 6

If your budget is tight, your best option will be to wait for Season 6 to air on your local PBS station. For many, it premiered this weekend, but PBS availability does vary by region. The major drawbacks to PBS viewing are that (a) you have to have PBS, (b) you have to pay attention to when they air, and (c) PBS frequently cuts little bits out of episodes for time constraints.

For a better alternative, you can stream it HERE with a PBS Masterpiece membership. If you haven't tried PBS Masterpiece before, you can get a free one-week trial and binge to your heart's content. Even if you've been a member in the past, it's a very affordable monthly membership (similar to Acorn TV or BritBox) and it supports PBS – plus you get a ton of other great British and European programs like Victoria, Mrs. Wilson, Inspector Lewis, Rough Justice, Grantchester (new season coming soon), and Dead Man Working.

What's Happening in Season 6 of Endeavour?

Roger Allam and Shaun Evans in Season 6 of Endeavour

Season 6 of Endeavour brings us to the year 1969, and an important Season 5 death casts a shadow over the new year – especially with the case unresolved. It picks up roughly 8 months after the previous season ended, so some of the relationships have changed or grown more distant. The new season has a very different feel from earlier seasons, and it's not always pleasant (perhaps to watch, but not so much for the characters).

They're still struggling with the change from Oxford City Police to Thames Valley Constabulatory, and that's taking some getting used to by everyone. Thursday is trying to adjust to cocky new boss DI Ronnie Box (Simon Harrison, Fearless), and Joan has moved back to Oxford to train in social services. Morse has been demoted to uniform sergeant…and picked up a shiny new mustache.

For those who are interested, here's the official synopsis:

The show’s sixth season is set in 1969 and picks up following the dissolution of Oxford City Police, and the merging with Thames Valley Constabulary, with the team dispersed as they find their feet in their various new roles. However, despite their separation, the tragic murder of DC George Fancy still hangs over them both collectively and individually, with the case remaining unresolved. Thursday must adjust to working with new boss DI Ronnie Box (Simon Harrison) and junior DS Alan Jago (Richard Riddell). Meanwhile, Joan has settled back in Oxford and is training to work in social services under the mentor of new manager Viv Wall (Alison Newman).

Will there be a Season 7 of Endeavour?

Roger Allam and Shaun Evans in Season 6

Yes. Endeavour has been officially renewed for Season 7, and it will air in 2020 on ITV in the UK. It will be filmed in and around Oxford in mid-2020, and the new season will bring us to the year 1970. According to the official press release, it's “a new decade of decimalisation, package holidays, the Oil Crisis, Blackouts, Three Day Weeks, and Europa Endlos.”

Unfortunately, writer Russell Lewis has indicated the show won't last too much longer. Around the release of Season 6, he said the show was entering its third act as it entered 1969. Viewers will likely have noticed a pretty dramatic shift in tone recently, so that does make sense. While early seasons showed only hints of the man Morse was to become, recent seasons have brought him closer and closer to the man we know from the original Inspector Morse novels and TV series

There's been no official word on how long the series will continue, but we can be grateful for each one we get – especially considering Endeavour was originally meant to be a one-off with no long-term plans. In theory, it could go on for another 16-17 years or so before we caught up with the original Morse, but that doesn't seem likely to happen (though I certainly wouldn't mind). It would be nice to learn more about that gap, though.

Still, the original Morse had 33 episodes, and Lewis also stopped at 33 as a mark of respect. Will Endeavour? Season 6 brings us up to 27 episodes, so perhaps there isn't much left…

What Does Shaun Evans do When He's Not Filming Endeavour?

If you've enjoyed Evans in Endeavour, you may have looked for other shows he's done. Unfortunately, you won't find a whole lot of other recent performances – but the reason is actually quite neat. He spends half the year filming Endeavour, and the other half restlessly traveling in the quest for knowledge.

He takes the time off and spends it reading, writing, and taking photos – a hobby he picked up after an early job in a camera shop. While he's yet to release any of his creative works to the public, I don't think it would be entirely unreasonable to say we should all keep an eye out for something in the future. One never knows – perhaps the next great British novel or detective will spring from his pen (or laptop).
