BritBox and Acorn TV offer the biggest chunk of the new British TV shows streaming each month – but there are another 5-10 services that semi-consistently offer new British TV premieres, and if British TV isn't your full-time job, it's hard to keep track. To help, we put this list together each month to make it easy to locate shows which:

  • Premiered in the UK or Ireland within the last year or two
  • Are expected to make their Stateside premiere in January 2025

Cunk on Life (2025)

Philomena Cunk (Diane Morgan, Motherland) returns for a one-off comedy special in which she tackles complex topics like nihilism, hedonism, quantum physics, morals, the Big Bang, and artificial intelligence. As she seeks answers about some of life's big questions, she looks to some of the world's foremost thinkers and creators, mangling and misinterpreting their genius as she goes.

Premiered January 2nd on Netflix.

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth premiered January 2nd

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth (2025)

Inspired by The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search for Justice by Jim Swire and Peter Biddulph, this drama follows Dr. Jim Swire (Colin Firth, The King’s Speech) as he seeks justice after losing his daughter in the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. Alongside his wife, Jane (Catherine McCormack, Slow Horses), Jim leads the UK victims’ families in a global fight for answers, challenging his faith in the justice system. The series also stars Rosanna Adams, Jemma Carlton, and Mark Bonner.

Premiered January 2nd on Peacock.

The Rig returned January 2nd

The Rig, Season 2

In season 2 of this sci-fi thriller, the surviving Kinloch Bravo crew is relocated to a secret Arctic facility, the Stac, where they face the aftermath of the tsunami, new threats from the ocean depths, and corporate conspiracies. Returning cast includes Iain Glen (Game of Thrones), Martin Compston (Line of Duty), and Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek), with newcomers Ross Anderson (The Last Kingdom) and Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (The Queen’s Gambit).

Premiered January 2nd on Prime Video.

Vera, Series 14 (The Final Season)

Brenda Blethyn returns to the role of DCI Vera Stanhope in two final episodes. In the first, she investigates the body of a young man found on the Tyne, uncovering a web of broken relationships, secret love, grudges, and fraud. Was it cold justice or something deeper?

The final episode takes Vera back to familiar ground as she investigates the death of a bright young student near The Dark Wives. With memories of her childhood surfacing, Vera unravels a mystery that blends past and present in a poignant and emotional farewell.

Scotland's Poshest Train premiered January 3rd

Vienna Blood returned on January 5th

In this season, DI Oskar Rheinhardt (Juergen Maurer) and Max Liebermann (Matthew Beard) face a double murder linked to a conspiracy threatening the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As secrets emerge, Max’s career thrives, but his relationship with Clara (Luise von Finckh) falters, while Oskar struggles with his feelings for Therese (Maria Köstlinger).

Based on Frank Tallis’s Liebermann Papers novels, the series also stars Conleth Hill, Amelia Bullmore, and Charlene McKenna.

Premiered January 5th on PBS and PBS Masterpiece, with new episodes airing weekly for for weeks.

Lucy Worsley Investigates returns on January 7th

Lucy Worsley Investigates, Season 2

Historian Lucy Worsley, former Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces in the UK, brings us a second series of this delightful docuseries about some of the most interesting parts of British history. Episodes will premiere as follows:

  • January 7th: “Jack the Ripper” – Lucy explores the Victorian obsession with true crime through the case of Jack the Ripper. Beyond the murders of Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane, she uncovers how a growing newspaper industry sensationalized the crimes and a society failed its most vulnerable.
  • January 14th: “William the Conqueror” – Lucy looks at how William the Conqueror secured victory at the Battle of Hastings and claimed England. She examines rare firsthand evidence and meets experts who shed light on this transformative period in history.
  • January 21st: “The Gunpowder Plot” – Lucy traces the lives of the plotters, from York, Guy Fawkes's hometown, to Ashby Manor, Robert Catesby’s base. With insights from historians, she pieces together the events of this infamous conspiracy.
  • March 23rd: “Bloody Mary” – Was Mary I truly “Bloody Mary,” or did history villainize her for being a powerful woman in a male-dominated world? Lucy revisits key evidence and expert perspectives to reassess Mary’s life, reign, and legacy.

All Creatures Great & Small returns January 12th

All Creatures Great & Small, Season 5

Set in spring 1941, the follows Helen (Rachel Shenton, For Her Sins) as she adjusts to motherhood while James (Nicholas Ralph, The Most Reluctant Convert) serves at RAF Abingdon. With the war in full swing, Siegfried (Samuel West, Mr. Selfridge) shoulders extra responsibilities at the practice, Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley, Anatomy of a Scandal) and Helen find new ways to support the community, and young Carmody (James Anthony-Rose, Masters of the Air) looks to prove himself. Meanwhile, Tristan’s unexpected return brings complications Siegfried hadn’t anticipated.

Premieres January 12th on PBS and PBS Masterpiece.

Rogue Heroes: Season 2 premieres January 12th

Rogue Heroes, Season 2

Set in spring 1943, this season of the wartime drama, based on Ben Macintyre’s Rogue Heroes, follows Paddy Mayne (Jack O’Connell, The North Water) as he takes command of the SAS after David Stirling’s (Connor Swindells, Sex Education) capture. With the focus shifting to Europe, the regiment faces mounting challenges, including GHQ’s doubts about its future, the creation of a second unit, and managing new recruits. Gwilym Lee (Midsomer Murders, The Great) joins the cast as Bill Stirling, David’s brother.

Premieres January 12th on MGM+.

The Murder of Sandra Rivett (2024)

This feature-length documentary takes a look back at the case of Lord Lucan, the British peer who famously disappeared after his children's nanny was murdered. 

Premieres January 14th on BritBox.

The Couple Next Door premieres January 17th

The Couple Next Door (2023)

In this six-part psychological thriller, Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete (Alfred Enoch) move to an upscale neighborhood to start a family. They befriend neighbors Danny (Sam Heughan), a traffic cop, and Becka (Jessica De Gouw), a yoga instructor. As the couples grow closer, a life-altering sexual entanglement on one fateful night changes everything.

The cast also features Hugh Dennis, Janine Duvitski, Joel Morris, and Kate Robbins.

Premieres January 17th on Starz, with new episodes airing weekly on Fridays through February 21st.

The Gone premieres January 20th

The Gone, Season 1 (2023, New Zealand)

When an Irish couple vanishes from a small New Zealand town, an Irish detective partners with a Kiwi officer to investigate. As they dig into the case, whispers of a connection to a series of long-forgotten murders begin to unsettle the close-knit community. Unearthing the truth won’t be easy, as suspicion and fear threaten to derail the search. The cast features Richard Flood (Grey’s Anatomy, Shameless), Acushla-Tara Kupe (Under the Vines, Mr. Corman), and Michelle Fairley (Gangs of London, Game of Thrones).

Episodes will premiere as follows (6 in total):

  • January 20th
    • Episode 1 – When a young Irish couple vanishes in rural New Zealand, detectives Theo Richter from Ireland and Diana Huia, a Maori investigator, collaborate to solve the perplexing case. 
    • Episode 2 – As Diana struggles with being on home ground. Richter fights his own demons as they both work hard to find Sinead and Ronan. 
  • January 27th
    • Episode 3 – Irish gangster Derry Fallon becomes a prime suspect in the couple's disappearance but when he remains elusive and Irish journalist Aileen Ryan disappears, the case begins to fall apart. 
Prime Target premieres January 22nd
 

Prime Target (2025)

This conspiracy thriller follows Edward Brooks (Leo Woodall), a math prodigy on the verge of uncovering a pattern in prime numbers that could unlock every computer worldwide. As an unseen enemy targets him, NSA agent Taylah Sanders (Quintessa Swindell) is assigned to monitor him. Together, they uncover a disturbing conspiracy with Edward at its center.

The eight-episode series features Stephen Rea, David Morrissey, Martha Plimpton, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jason Flemyng, and Harry Lloyd.

Premieres January 22nd on Apple TV+, with new episodes airing weekly on Wednesdays through March 5th.

Captivated

Captivated (aka Too Good to Be True in the UK), 2024

Rachel (Kara Tointon, Archie), a single mother struggling to support her son Liam (Charlie Hodson-Prior, Dune: Prophecy), accepts an offer to work exclusively for Elliot (Allen Leech, Downton Abbey), a wealthy businessman. The job promises better pay and fewer hours, but Elliot's behavior soon becomes controlling. As Rachel investigates his past, she uncovers a troubling secret that explains his obsession, forcing her to confront unexpected dangers to protect her family.

Father Brown returns for season 12 on the 23rd

Father Brown, Season 12

Mark Williams (Harry Potter, Midsomer Murders) returns as Father Brown, the sleuthing clergyman created by GK Chesterton. After the proposal in series 11, Kembleford is alive with wedding plans (we'll avoid spoilers in case you're not caught up). Unfortunately , chaos ensues when the groom’s father arrives, and Mrs. Devine is accused of murder. With a Tudor re-enactment death, a Vatican mission, and Flambeau's return, Father Brown faces new challenges—and a lurking nemesis.

Returning alongside Mark Williams as Father Brown are Claudie Blakley as Mrs. Devine, Tom Chambers as Chief Inspector Sullivan, John Burton as Sergeant Goodfellow, Ruby-May Martinwood as Brenda, and John Light as Flambeau. Ten 45-minute episodes, airing weekly.

The Ink Black Heart premieres January 23rd, with new episodes weekly through February 13th

CB Strike, The Ink Black Heart (Season 6)

In Season 6 of this contemporary crime drama, Strike (Tom Burke) and Robin (Holliday Grainger) investigate the murder of a cult TV cartoon creator linked to an online troll called “Anomie.” Untangling a web of aliases, business disputes, and family drama, they face a case that tests their limits at every turn.

The four-episode series features David Westhead, Christian McKay, Emma Fielding, Tupele Dorgu, and Natasha O’Keeffe. Based on The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling), the sixth Cormoran Strike novel.

As a side note, I personally felt this was the weakest novel of the entire series so far – so if it's your entry point into the series and you find it's not grabbing you, I'd recommend going back to the beginning and starting there. It's not that The Ink Black Heart is bad, it's just not as good as the others.

Asia premieres January 25th

Asia (2024)

Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, this groundbreaking natural history series explores Asia’s stunning landscapes and extraordinary wildlife. Spanning seven episodes and a behind-the-scenes special, the series captures unseen animal behavior, from Sri Lankan elephants stealing food from buses to sea snakes teaming up with fish to hunt.

Filmed over nearly four years, it highlights Asia’s natural wonders—from the Gobi Desert to Siberia’s polar wilderness—and addresses conservation challenges and solutions led by regional heroes. This is the first BBC America wildlife series focused entirely on Asia, home to the planet’s most diverse environments.

The Catch premieres January 27th

The Catch (2023)

Based on T.M. Logan's bestselling novel, this tense story follows Ed (Jason Watkins, Trollied, McDonald & Dodds), a devoted father who becomes suspicious when he meets his daughter’s new boyfriend, Ryan (Aneurin Barnard, Dunkirk, The Goldfinch). Convinced that Ryan is hiding something, Ed sets out to uncover the truth. But as his investigation deepens, questions arise: Is Ryan deceiving his family, or is Ed’s obsession going too far?
