I recently watched the first season of The Syndicate, and I must say – I'm hooked. I intended to space out the episodes to enjoy them over time, but I'm sure you can guess how that went. A day or so after watching the first one, I had finished the first series. If you're not familiar with the show, I'll summarize it for you. Basically, it shows what happens when a group of friends or acquaintances wins the lottery. Each season features a different location and group of people, with the first taking place among the staff of a small grocery store.

I like The Syndicate because it dives into that fantasy we've all had (aside from perhaps the royals and heirs among us). What would we do if we won the lottery? Would it change us? Would it bring out ugliness in the people around us? Would it solve all our problems? Would it ruin everything? In the show, we see a little bit of all of those things. It's darker than I expected, but in a way that's very gritty and realistic. Different characters respond differently to their winnings, and it's really quite fascinating.

Sound interesting to you? Let's talk about where you can watch it, because there are a number of options. Because the show began in 2013, it's a bit harder to find it on many of the popular streaming plans. Only one season is available on Acorn, and none are available on Netflix.

Something else that's a little unusual with this show is that different outlets label the seasons differently. To minimize confusion, I'll include descriptions and go by the IMDb categorization.

Series 1: This series focuses on a small group of friendly co-workers at a grocery store. As of November 2018, it has been removed from both Hulu and Amazon Video (it was previously available for purchase). As of right now, the only legal way to watch it in the US (that we're aware of it)is on DVD.

Series 2: In series 2, a group of hospital workers win the lottery together. As of November 2018, it's no longer on Hulu. However, the series IS available on Amazon Streaming and it can also be purchased on DVD.  As a warning, please note that the DVD in this case is a Region 2 DVD, so it won't play on standard US players. If you're interested in being able to play this and other non-US DVDs without worry, check out our post on Region-Free DVD Players.

Series 3, The Syndicate: All or Nothing: This season takes place at Hazelwood Manor, where the estate is slowly going bankrupt and the staff suddenly wins the lottery. Acorn refers to this as Series 1 of “The Syndicate: All or Nothing”, but IMDb refers to it as Series 3, so that's what we'll call it here. You can view this series with a regular Acorn subscription, or by getting an Amazon Acorn subscription. You can also purchase it on DVD.

Though I'm sure the availability will change over time, I hope this helps anyone interested find the ones they haven't yet seen. Happy watching!
