What’s the Series About?
Shetland follows major investigations handled by the local police in the remote Shetland Islands, where isolation, history, and family ties complicate even the most straightforward leads. Originally, the series followed Douglas Henshall as D IJimmy Perez. Since Season 8, Ashley Jensen (Agatha Raisin) has starred as DI Ruth Calder alongside longtime fan favorite DI Alison “Tosh” McIntosh, with cases that lean on forensics, local knowledge, and methodical interview work rather than spectacle.
The series is based on the Shetland novels by Ann Cleeves. The first book in the series is Raven Black (8 books in total).
Season 10: What's Happening?
The new season opens with Calder and Tosh called to the isolated hamlet of Lunniswick after the body of retired social worker Eadie Tulloch is found outdoors, exposed to the elements for several days. Residents are tight-lipped about their connections to the victim, and as the detectives untangle relationships and long-held grievances, a personal link for one member of the team pushes loyalties to the limit.
There are six episodes in the new season.
Who’s Back (and Who’s New)
Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell return as DI Ruth Calder and DI Alison “Tosh” McIntosh, joined again by Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson, Lewis Howden as Sgt Billy McCabe, Steven Miller as Rev Alan Calder, Anne Kidd as pathologist Cora McLean, Conor McCarry as PC Alex Grant, Eubha Akilade as PC Lorna Burns, and Angus Miller as Donnie. Samuel Anderson also joins the cast as the new procurator fiscal, Matt Blake.
We'll see guest appearances from Clive Russell (The Witcher) who plays Arthur Mair, Ellie Haddington (Motherland) as Lana Mair, Niall MacGregor (Line of Duty) as Tom Jameson, Louise Brealey (Such Brave Girls) as Isobel Jameson, Leigh Biagi (The Prodigal Father) as Morag McCabe, Greg McHugh (Guilt) as Colin Waite, Frances Gray (Vera) as Gina Powell, Stephen McMillan (Toxic Town) as David Powell, Stuart Townsend (Two Minutes to Midnight) as Ed Tulloch, Saskia Ashdown (Karen Pirie) as Hayley Burnett, Joanne Thomson (Outlander) as Amy Shannon, Choe-Ann Tylor (Granite Harbour) as Stevie Shannon, and Maria MacDonell (The House Was Not Hungry Then) as Eadie Tulloch.
Trailer
The one-minute teaser sets a sober tone: a remote village, a grim discovery, and the suggestion that the truth will turn on who’s willing to talk—and who isn’t.
When and Where to Watch
In the UK, Season 10 premieres on BBC One and iPlayer on Wednesday, 5 November, with weekly episodes (six in total).
No US date has been announced yet, but we'd be surprised to see it anywhere other than BritBox. In recent years, the US premiere has been almost immediately after the UK premiere, so we'll be keeping an eye out for any updates.
