Two women meet, swap influence, and watch their lives tilt off-axis. That’s the hook of The Guest, a four-part thriller about power, class, and a friendship that curdles—now officially on its way to American screens.
What it’s about
Ria (Gabrielle Creevy, Black Doves; Three Women) is a cleaner who hasn’t had the time—or headspace—to decide what she wants from life. Fran (Eve Myles, Broadchurch; The Crow Girl) is a successful, magnetic business owner who seems to have it all. When Ria begins cleaning Fran’s house, admiration turns into influence: Fran urges her to “take control,” and Ria starts to believe she can. Then a single, disastrous decision binds them together by a shared secret. From there, The Guest becomes a cat-and-mouse story about loyalty, leverage, and how quickly confidence can turn coercive. The central question never goes away: who’s using whom?
Cast and characters
Alongside Myles and Creevy, the ensemble features Sion Daniel Young (Slow Horses; Lost Boys & Fairies), Emun Elliott (The Gold; Guilt), Bethan Mary-James (Sisters), Julian Lewis Jones (Dope Girls), Joseph Ollman (Queenie), Clive Russell (Game of Thrones), and Catherine Ayers (The Way).
The Guest is written, created, and executive produced by Matthew Barry (Men Up; Industry). All four episodes are directed by Ashley Way (Who Is Erin Carter?; Men Up). Executive producers include Nicola Shindler (Happy Valley; It’s a Sin) and Davina Earl (The Red King) for Quay Street Productions (part of ITV Studios), alongside Barry and Way. Commissioned by BBC iPlayer/BBC One and BBC Cymru Wales, with international distribution by ITV Studios.
Filming Location
The series is filmed and set in Wales, using real homes, workplaces, and nightlife to underline the social gap between its two leads. Many exterior scenes were filmed in downtown Cardiff (seen above).
