British TV has a crazy habit of letting shows “sleep” for years before randomly bringing back things people never expected to see again – and Doctor Foster is the latest series to get that treatment. Nearly a decade after we last spent time with the slightly unhinged Gemma Foster, the BBC has released the first image from the third and final series of Doctor Foster, along with details of the returning and new cast.
The five-part final series will pick up their story years after the events of the previous series.
What Is Doctor Foster Series 3 About?
When Doctor Foster began in 2015, Gemma discovered that Simon was having an affair, setting off an increasingly bitter battle that continued through the second series.
Spoiler alert: The following section includes details about the ending of season 2. Continue on to the bit about the cast to avoid details about what happened where we last left off.
By the end of season 2, their 15-year-old son Tom had become caught in the fallout. After Gemma stopped Simon from taking his own life, she returned home to discover that Tom had disappeared, leaving behind a brief note.
The new series jumps forward almost a decade.
Gemma is still working as a GP and still living in the same house, but she finally appears to be on the verge of a new beginning. She has met Callum and is preparing to marry him. She's behaving like a normal, relatively stable and sane woman.
As the wedding approaches, however, people and problems from Gemma’s past begin resurfacing. Her happiness and reputation come under threat, forcing her to try to figure out who is trying to hurt her and why. The return of the now-adult Tom will also answer some questions about what happened to the Foster family after he left.
Which Doctor Foster Cast Members Are Returning?
Suranne Jones (Vigil, Gentleman Jack) reprises her BAFTA-winning role as Gemma Foster. Bertie Carvel (Dalgliesh) returns as Simon, Gemma’s ex-husband and the man whose affair triggered the events of the original series. Tom Taylor (The Dark Tower) is also returning as their son Tom, now an adult.
Several other familiar characters will be coming back. Adam James returns as Gemma’s neighbour Neil, while Thusitha Jayasundera reprises her role as Gemma’s friend and colleague Ros. Anna Madeley also returns as Lucy.
Who’s Joining the Cast of Doctor Foster Series 3?
Dustin Demri-Burns is the most significant new addition, playing Callum, Gemma’s new partner and prospective husband.
The new cast also includes Rosalie Craig (Riot Women, The Serpent Queen), Anjana Vasan (Black Mirror, Wicked Little Letters), Karima McAdams (Hijack, Dune: Prophecy) and Michael Balogun (Top Boy, Sherwood). Gracie Oddie-James (Grantchester), Lois Baglin (Surface), Christina Balmer (House of Guinness), Justin Salinger (Hijack, Hanna) and Ash Tandon (Malpractice, Bodyguard) have also joined the final series.
The BBC has not yet revealed full character details for most of the new additions, so we'll have to wait and see who's doing what.
Who’s Making Doctor Foster Series 3?
Series creator Mike Bartlett returns to write all five episodes and serves as an executive producer. John Hardwick (One Day, The Buccaneers) directs, with Nige Watson (Killing Eve, The Assassin) producing.
Suranne Jones is also an executive producer through TeamAkers Productions. Drama Republic, which produced the first two series, returns for the final instalment in association with Fictional Company and TeamAkers Productions.
BBC Studios is handling international sales. The Doctor Foster format has now been licensed for adaptations in 15 territories around the world (we think it would make a fantastic K-drama).
When Will Doctor Foster Series 3 Premiere?
The third and final series of Doctor Foster is scheduled to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK in 2027. An exact premiere date has not yet been announced. For American viewers, there's currently no confirmed premiere date or streaming home for the new season – though we can't imagine it NOT making its way across the pond pretty quickly.
The first two seasons are currently available to stream on BritBox in the US, making it the natural place many viewers will look for the new episodes. However, BritBox has not yet confirmed whether it will carry Series 3. We'll be keeping an eye out for more details.
