The Cambridge-set crime drama Professor T returns to U.S. screens this August with new cases, a new detective sergeant, and a sharper edge from the brilliant but difficult Jasper Tempest.

What’s Professor T About?

Set at the University of Cambridge, Professor T follows the eccentric and obsessive Professor Jasper Tempest, a criminology lecturer whose extraordinary intellect and keen eye for detail make him an unlikely but invaluable consultant to the local police. While his rigid routines and awkward manner often baffle those around him, his brilliance at uncovering criminal patterns is unmatched.

In Season 4, the series picks up six months after the shocking conclusion of Season 3. The team must process their grief while facing a dangerous new wave of crime. Jasper’s lectures grow more intense, and he takes up a surprising new musical hobby. His mother Adelaide unexpectedly finds romance, while therapist Dr. Helena Goldberg is forced to navigate the increasingly blurry line between her personal and professional life.

Cast and Crew

Ben Miller and Frances de la Tour will return for Season 4 of Professor T

Ben Miller returns as the sharp-minded but emotionally reserved Professor Jasper Tempest. Frances de la Tour reprises her role as Jasper’s mother, Adelaide Tempest, while Juliet Stevenson is back as therapist Dr. Helena Goldberg. Barney White steps into a new role as the now-promoted DI Dan Winters, and Sunetra Sarker returns as DCI Maiya Goswami.

Spoiler alert for those not caught up through Season 3:

This season introduces Rhian Blundell as DS Chloe Highsmith, replacing DS Lisa Donckers. Emma Naomi, who portrayed Donckers in previous seasons, departed the series after her character was killed off in the Season 3 finale.

Directing duties this season are handled by Belgian filmmakers Kaat Beels and Joel Vanhoebrouck, both of whom have previously directed for the acclaimed series Hotel Beau Séjour. Stephen Brady, who took over writing duties in Season 3, returns to script all six episodes of Season 4. The show is produced by Eagle Eye Drama, with Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino serving as executive producers.

Additional Info for Fans

With Season 5 already commissioned, the U.K. version of Professor T becomes the longest-running adaptation in the international franchise. The Belgian original ran for three seasons (39 episodes), and the German version reached four seasons with a lower total episode count. By the end of Season 4, the U.K. version will have aired 24 episodes. Season 5 will bring the count to 30, putting it within reach of overtaking the Belgian version in overall length.

Filming for the series takes place in and around Cambridge, with locations like Jesus College often serving as the visual stand-in for the fictional Department of Forensic Criminology.
