David Mitchell’s accidental detective is heading back to Cambridge, and the BBC has released a new trailer offering a better look at what awaits him in Ludwig Season 2. The new six-part season picks up after the events of the first series, with John no longer pretending to be his missing twin brother James, but still determined to find out what happened to him.
What Is Ludwig Season 2 About?
John’s unusual success at solving murders has earned him an official position as a Crime Scene Consultant with the Cambridge Police Authority. That means he can continue putting his puzzle-solving abilities to work on seemingly impossible crimes alongside DCI Russell Carter, played by Dipo Ola. There is, however, a significant catch.
Now that John officially works with the police, he's forbidden from using police resources to investigate the disappearance of his twin brother James or the case James was pursuing before he vanished. Naturally, that doesn’t mean John intends to stop looking.
Lucy is equally determined to find her husband and has taken a job at the local newspaper, giving her a new avenue for investigating away from the police station. The second season will continue following their search for James while John attempts to keep that unofficial investigation separate from his new job.
What Does the New Ludwig Trailer Reveal?
The new trailer suggests the mystery surrounding James will move further into the foreground this season, teasing missing detectives, multiple murders and high-ranking cover-ups. John becomes increasingly suspicious of the people around him, declaring that everyone, including James and members of the police, appears to be playing games.
At the same time, the format that made the first season work remains intact. John will continue to encounter individual murder cases that allow him to treat crime scenes like elaborate logic puzzles, even as the larger mystery about his brother develops in the background. The trailer also offers glimpses of several new additions to the cast, including Mark Bonnar and Stephen Merchant.
Who’s in the Cast of Ludwig Season 2?
David Mitchell returns as John Taylor, the reclusive puzzle setter whose unexpected talent for solving murders turned him into an unlikely (but remarkably competent) detective. Anna Maxwell Martin is back as Lucy Betts-Taylor, John’s sister-in-law and the wife of his missing identical twin James, and Dylan Hughes returns as her son, Henry Betts-Taylor.
Dipo Ola returns as DCI Russell Carter, who will now work with John in his official capacity as a consultant. Several new faces are joining the series as well. Mark Bonnar (Dept. Q, Shetland) and Sian Clifford (Fleabag) are among the additions to the second-season cast. Stephen Merchant (The Outlaws) will guest star as Danny Sloane, a cocky snooker champion who becomes involved in one of John’s investigations.
Who Created Ludwig?
Ludwig was created and written by Mark Brotherhood, with David Mitchell also serving as an executive producer. The series is produced by Big Talk Studios in association with That Mitchell and Webb Company, with BritBox involved as the North American home of the series.
When Will Ludwig Season 2 Premiere?
Ludwig Season 2 premieres in the UK on Thursday, August 20, 2026, on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Luckily, it sounds like the wait for US viewers will be shorter this time than it was for season 1. The first season premiered on BBC One in the UK on September 2024, but didn’t begin streaming on BritBox in the United States until March 2025, nearly six months later. BritBox has confirmed that Ludwig Season 2 will premiere in North America in 2026, although an exact US release date has not yet been announced.
For now, season 1 of Ludwig is currently available to stream on BritBox in the US.
