The BBC has shared the first substantial details about Line of Duty season 7, confirming that Jed Mercurio’s police thriller is moving ahead with a new run. It is still in the production stage for now, with filming due to begin in Belfast in spring 2026.

What is Line of Duty about?

Line of Duty returns

For newer viewers, Line of Duty follows anti-corruption officers as they investigate police misconduct, abuse of power, and possible links between serving officers and organized crime. Over six seasons, the series built a reputation for intricate interview scenes, long-running conspiracies, and cases that often exposed wider institutional problems rather than just individual wrongdoing – and it's the biggest reason Jed Mercurio is now a household name amongst most British TV viewers.

Season 7 keeps the same basic framework, but with an important change. AC-12 has now been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, meaning anti-corruption work is now operating under a different structure. That shift appears to be central to the new season’s setup, so it could come with some interesting shifts in power, hierarchy, and operating procedures.

What's season 7 about?

According to the BBC, Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings are assigned their most sensitive case yet. The investigation looks at DI Dominic Gough, a high-profile officer who's earned praise for a string of successful takedowns of organized crime through Tactical Operations Unit 7, or TO-7.

Gough is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator. The official synopsis also suggests that his case may not be the whole story. One of the key questions in the new season is whether the allegations against him are the real focus, or whether they're distracting attention from a larger threat still operating in the shadows. Considering some of the things in the news lately, it's enough to make you wonder if any part of the story was inspired by real life.

Who’s in the cast?

Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar all return for season 7, reprising their roles in the core trio.

Robert Carlyle joins as the guest lead, playing Detective Constable Shaun Massie, a Specialist Rifle Officer and veteran marksman working with TO-7. The BBC describes him as a gruff loner who usually keeps to himself, but whose detached manner changes dramatically when his commanding officer comes under investigation.

Tom Weston-Jones (Warrior, Sanditon) plays DI Dominic Gough. Other newcomers within TO-7 include Laura Aikman (This City Is Ours, Gavin & Stacey) as DC Paula Beckman, Levi Brown (This Town, Girl Taken) as DC Luke Tobin, and Amy Leigh Hickman (Ackley Bridge, You) as DC Nira Rashid.

The season also brings back several characters from earlier in the show’s history. Mark Bonnar returns as former Deputy Chief Constable Mike Dryden, Owen Teale as Chief Constable Philip Osborne, Perry Fitzpatrick as DS Chris Lomax, and Christina Chong as DI Nicky Rogerson.

Further new cast members include David Calder (Motherland, Rivals), Steven Elder (Prisoner, Toxic Town), Dominic Mafham (Vigil, Killing Eve), Aimee Powell (Believe Me, Art Detectives), and Naomi Yang (Under Salt Marsh, Maternal).

Behind the scenes

Jed Mercurio remains the chief creative force behind Line of Duty, with the series produced by World Productions for the BBC. The BBC has confirmed that the cast have already gathered for a readthrough, and production is scheduled to begin in Belfast in spring 2026.

When and where to watch

There is no exact premiere date yet for Line of Duty season 7 (still too early). The BBC says the new season will air in 2027 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

For US viewers, no broadcaster or streaming home has been announced yet. Given that BritBox was the home of season 6 when it premiered, that would be our best guess for finding season 7 when it's out – but one can never be sure until an official announcement has been made.
