The BBC has released the first images from The Witch Farm, a new four-part supernatural mystery inspired by the reported haunting of a remote farmhouse in the Welsh countryside. If you enjoy spooky shows with a dash of folk horror, this is one you'll want to keep an eye out for.
What Is The Witch Farm About?
The story begins when Bill, Liz and their teenage son Jonathan move to Heol Fanog, a remote farmhouse in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. Initially, the isolation gives them the fresh start they've been hoping for. But we know that can't last, right? It's not long before unexplained disturbances begin occurring around the house and a strange figure appears.
As the incidents escalate, Bill and Liz begin investigating the history of the property and surrounding land. Their search for an explanation also puts increasing pressure on their marriage, especially since they're also struggling with basic things like their own sanity and whether they can even trust each other.
Is The Witch Farm Based on a True Story?
The series is inspired by reported events at the real Heol Fanog farmhouse and by first-hand accounts and theories examined in Danny Robins’ BBC Radio 4 podcast The Witch Farm.
The podcast, first released in 2022, investigated the experiences of Bill and Liz Rich, who moved to the isolated Welsh farmhouse with Bill’s teenage son Laurence in 1989. It combined dramatised portions of their story with a modern investigation into the claims surrounding the property, which has sometimes been described as one of Britain’s most haunted houses.
The television version is not intended as a literal reconstruction of every detail. Some characters, events and chronology have been created or altered for dramatic purposes. One visible change is the family’s teenage son, who was Laurence in the accounts used for the podcast but is named Jonathan in the television drama.
Who’s in the Cast of The Witch Farm?
Gabrielle Creevy stars as Liz alongside Michael Socha as Bill, and Lewin Lloyd (His Dark Materials) plays their teenage son Jonathan.
The supporting cast includes Sian Gibson (Peter Kay’s Car Share, The Power of Parker), Robert Pugh (Game of Thrones, The Tuckers) and Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso, Downton Abbey). Edward Holcroft (Industry, The Agency) and Roger Evans (House of the Dragon, Northern Lights) also appear.
Who’s Making The Witch Farm?
The four-part series was created and written by Danny Robins, whose previous work includes the BBC paranormal series and podcast Uncanny, The Battersea Poltergeist and the stage play 2:22 – A Ghost Story.
Stacey Gregg directs all four episodes, with Megan Ott producing. Robins and Gregg also serve as executive producers alongside Simon Barnard, James Gandhi and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen and Nawfal Faizullah and Rebecca Ferguson for the BBC.
Mammoth Screen produces the series, with additional funding support from the Welsh Government through Creative Wales.
When Will The Witch Farm Premiere?
The BBC says The Witch Farm is coming soon to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, but an exact premiere date has not yet been announced. For American viewers, there is currently no confirmed US streaming service or premiere date. ITV Studios is distributing the series internationally, but no American deal has been announced so far. We’ll be keeping an eye out for further US release news.
In the meantime, American listeners who want to hear the story that inspired the series can find Danny Robins’ original The Witch Farm podcast on most major podcast services, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
