The BBC has commissioned two more seasons of Father Brown, with series 14 now filming in the Cotswolds and series 15 already confirmed to follow. That means the long-running daytime mystery will continue well beyond its latest run, extending the life of one of the UK’s most durable crime dramas.
What is Father Brown about?
For newer viewers, Father Brown follows a Roman Catholic priest in 1950s Kembleford who has an inconvenient habit of noticing things other people miss and getting dragged into murder investigations. Based on the stories by G.K. Chesterton, the series turns village life, parish disputes, and local scandals into murder mysteries, with Father Brown using patience, insight, and a deep understanding of human nature to solve crimes the police cannot quite untangle on their own.
Over the years, the show has become one of the BBC’s most successful daytime dramas, combining cozy period atmosphere with a steady run of inventive cases. Even after 140 episodes, the show remains a strong international performer, including in the US.
What happens in season 14?
Series 14 returns to Kembleford in 1955, with Father Brown and the team once again drawn into a wide range of cases. The BBC says the new season will include mysteries involving magicians, meals on wheels, avant-garde artists, and even deadly spiders on the loose.
But this will not be business as usual. The biggest ongoing thread appears to be the return of Father Lazarus, one of Father Brown’s most dangerous adversaries. Fresh from another prison break and apparently intent on revenge, he's set to cast a dark shadow across the season before things build toward what the BBC describes as an exhilarating finale.
Who’s in the cast?
Mark Williams returns in the title role, and this time his creative contribution has also been recognized with an executive producer credit.
Returning cast members for series 14 include Tom Chambers as Inspector Sullivan, Claudie Blakley as Mrs Isabel Sullivan, and John Burton as Sergeant Goodfellow. The new season will also bring back several familiar recurring faces, including Nancy Carroll as Lady Felicia, Lex Shrapnel as Father Lazarus, Roger May as Bishop Fox, and Kieran Hodgson as Father Lindsey.
One of the biggest cast changes is the arrival of Hannah Bristow as Rita Flint, Father Brown’s new no-nonsense housekeeper. According to the BBC, Rita gets off to a rocky start in the role, suggesting she may shake up the household dynamic a bit. Guest stars this season will include Bill Bailey and Clive Mantle.
Behind the scenes
Father Brown is made by BBC Studios Drama Productions for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Neil Irvine executive produces for BBC Studios Drama Productions, with Mark Williams also now serving as an executive producer. Caroline Slater is the series producer, James Gillam-Smith is the script producer, and Helen Munson is the commissioning editor for BBC Daytime.
The BBC’s announcement also underlines just how established the show has become. First launched in 2013, Father Brown is described as the UK’s number one daytime drama of the last decade, and the number one daytime drama of 2026 to date.
When and where to watch
Series 14 is currently filming and will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early 2027. Details about series 15 have not yet been announced, but based on past patterns, we'd expect to see them back in Blockley filming season 15 during spring/summer of 2027.
For US viewers, the BBC announcement does not include a North American premiere date or streaming outlet for the new season. Given that every other recent season has premiered on BritBox, we'd be very surprised if the outlet was another BUT BritBox – and based on past patterns, we'd expect to see the new season showing up sometime in the first quarter of 2027 (assuming no major catastrophes). We'll post more when we have official confirmation, though.
