Netflix is revisiting classic Christie territory with Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, a three episode adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1929 novel The Seven Dials Mystery. Set in 1925, it puts a young aristocrat at the center of a deadly country house prank that turns into a larger conspiracy.
What is Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials about?
The story begins at a weekend house party at Chimneys, where a group of bright young things decide to cure a chronic oversleeper with an elaborate prank. By morning, one of them is dead, and the practical joke looks very much like murder.
Mia McKenna Bruce (How to Have Sex, Persuasion) plays Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent, a determined and curious young woman who refuses to leave the matter to the authorities. As she starts asking questions, she's drawn into a plot that reaches beyond the walls of the country estate, toward a shadowy group known as Seven Dials.
From what we can tell so far, the series keeps the core elements very similar to the novel. There is the mix of light social comedy and darker crime, the contrast between privileged young partygoers and the more serious figures around them, and the sense that what looks like a self contained mystery in one house may be connected to something bigger – BUT, since we know that all recent Agatha Christie adaptations have done something to shake things up a bit, it will be interesting to see how they approach it in this case.
Who is in the cast?
Mia McKenna Bruce leads the series as Bundle Brent. Helena Bonham Carter (One Life, Nolly) plays Lady Caterham, Bundle’s socially prominent relative, while Martin Freeman (The Responder, Black Panther) appears as Battle, the Scotland Yard man who becomes involved in the case.
Corey Mylchreest (Queen Charlotte) appears as Gerry Wade, the friend at the center of the fateful prank. Ed Bluemel (Sex Education, Killing Eve) plays Jimmy Thesiger, and Nabhaan Rizwan (KAOS) plays Ronnie Devereux, two more of the young set caught up in the investigation.
Behind the scenes
The adaptation is written by Chris Chibnall, best known to many crime fans as the creator of Broadchurch and former showrunner of Doctor Who.
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is produced by Orchid Pictures, the company from The Crown executive producer Suzanne Mackie. She executive produces alongside Chibnall, Chris Sussman (Good Omens), and director Chris Sweeney, who also executive produces after recent work on The Tourist and Back to Life. James Prichard executive produces for Agatha Christie Limited, with Andy Stebbing also on board and Joanna Crow as series producer.
The project was first announced under the title The Seven Dials Mystery. The updated title, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, was confirmed along with the release date.
When and where to watch
