PBS Masterpiece has released the first trailer for the new adaptation of Maigret, introducing Benjamin Wainwright as Georges Simenon’s Parisian inspector in a contemporary setting. The series moves the character into the 2020s while keeping the focus on observation, interviews, and steady pressure on suspects.
What the New Series Is About
Billed as the first contemporary television take on Simenon’s novels, the show presents Jules Maigret as an unconventional young detective with something to prove. He's a rising figure inside the Police Judiciaire whose strength lies in reading people, understanding how the city works, and knowing when to push. The trailer highlights modern police rooms, current forensics, and a fast-moving Paris. The premise is straightforward: Maigret listens, watches, and builds cases by assembling small facts until the picture is clear.
Earlier English-language versions were period pieces set in mid-century Paris, complete with the familiar pipe and heavy overcoat. This production updates the timeline to the present day and casts a younger lead. The change places Maigret in a police culture shaped by smartphones, CCTV, and rolling news, and it shifts the visual language from foggy streets to glass offices and busy pavements. The aim is to keep Simenon’s core idea intact while using present-day tools and tempo.
Cast and Crew
Benjamin Wainwright (Belgravia) stars as Jules Maigret. Stefanie Martini (The Gold) plays Louise Maigret. Shaniqua Okwok (It’s a Sin) appears as Inspector Berthe Janvier, and Nathalie Armin (Showtrial) plays Prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel. The supporting cast includes Blake Harrison (World on Fire), Reda Elazouar (Sex Education), Kerrie Hayes (The Responder), and Rob Kazinsky (Star Trek: Section 31).
Patrick Harbinson (The Tower) serves as lead writer and directs the first two episodes, with Faye Gilbert (The Bay) and David Evans (Domina) also directing. Harbinson is an executive producer alongside Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece and John Simenon for Georges Simenon Limited. The series is produced with Playground Entertainment for Masterpiece.

A Brief Look Back: Maigret in Britain
In the 1960s, actor Rupert Davies starred in 52 Maigret adaptations for the BBC. Author Georges Simenon so loved his portrayal that he once sent Davies a novel inscribed to his “perfect Maigret”. While the major streaming subscriptions don't currently offer this one, you CAN get it via streaming purchase HERE.
In the early 1990s, Irish-English actor Michael Gambon played Maigret for an ITV television series. At time of writing, that portrayal is available on BritBox (or by streaming purchase) HERE.
More recently, Rowan Atkinson starred in an ITV adaptation set in 1950s Paris. Despite being widely praised, it only lasted for two seasons, which you can watch HERE on BritBox (or streaming purchase).
