BritBox has released the official trailer and new images for the second season of Karen Pirie, the acclaimed cold-case drama led by Lauren Lyle (Outlander). The new investigation reaches back to one of Scotland’s most notorious disappearances and puts fresh pressure on Karen’s team.
What Is Karen Pirie Season 2 About?
In 1984, Catriona Grant—heiress to a vast oil fortune—and her two-year-old son Adam were abducted at gunpoint outside a fish-and-chip shop in Fife. Ransom notes set off a tabloid frenzy, the culprits went silent, and mother and child were never seen again. Decades later, the discovery of a body with clear links to the kidnap finally gives police something solid to chase.
Newly promoted DI Karen Pirie (Lauren Lyle, Outlander) pulls together an “unbeatable” unit: DC Jason “Mint” Murray (Chris Jenks, Sex Education, Vigil) and DS Phil Parhatka (Zach Wyatt, The Witcher: Blood Origin, Timestalker). With the Grants’ international profile—and unrelenting pressure from Catriona’s father, Sir Broderick Grant—the stakes couldn’t be higher. As Karen digs into the fallout from autumn 1984, political grudges and long-buried secrets surface, proving the past is far from finished with Fife.
The series will be made up of three feature-length episodes, with one released each week.

Who’s in the Cast?
Alongside Lyle, returning cast members include Chris Jenks (Sex Education, Vigil), Zach Wyatt (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Timestalker), Steve John Shepherd (Harry Potter), Emer Kenny (The Curse, Save Me Too), and Rakhee Thakrar (Wonka, Sex Education). Newcomers include Saskia Ashdown (Six Four), James Cosmo (Braveheart, Game of Thrones) as Sir Broderick Grant, Frances Tomelty (Unforgotten), and John Michie (Holby City).
When Does Karen Pirie Season 2 Premiere?
Season 2 premieres on BritBox on October 2, with new episodes rolling out weekly through the finale on October 16. You can stream season 1 HERE.
Based on Val McDermid’s novel A Darker Domain and adapted by Emer Kenny (The Curse, Save Me Too), the new season is produced by World Productions for BritBox/ITV, with direction from Gareth Bryn and Amanda Blue and Marcus Wilson producing; executive producers include Simon Heath, Emma Luffingham, Emer Kenny, and Val McDermid.
