The first images have arrived from the second season of Irish-language crime drama Crá, with Dónall Ó Héalaí returning as Garda Conall Ó Súilleabháin for another series of investigations in County Donegal.

The six-part drama returns with Conall at a very different point in his career, but a new murder case will take him straight back to the community and unresolved questions he’s been trying to leave behind.

What Is Crá (aka Boglands)?

For American viewers, there’s a good chance the title Boglands will be more familiar. Crá is released internationally under that name.

The first season followed Garda Conall Ó Súilleabháin after the body of his mother, who had been missing for 15 years, was discovered buried in a bog near his isolated Donegal community. Barred from officially investigating the case himself, Conall joined forces with young journalist and podcaster Ciara-Kate as they began uncovering secrets within the village.

The first season eventually sold into 68 countries, making the Irish-language drama one of the more widely distributed recent crime series from the region.

The second season finds Conall training as a detective after moving to Letterkenny. He’s now working under Detective Aoife Cooney, played by Siobhán O’Kelly, as he takes on new cases and begins the next stage of his career.

That fresh start doesn’t last long. A murder investigation takes Conall and Aoife back to Carraignanaul, the hometown he’s been trying to escape, where he reconnects with his old friend Sergeant Barry Roche.

Conall also remains troubled by questions surrounding his father, Art, giving the new investigation another personal connection to the life he left behind.

Siobhán O’Kelly (Mix Tape) takes on a major role this season as Detective Aoife Cooney, Conall’s new mentor in Letterkenny.

The new season adds Lochlann Ó Mearáin (Mr Loverman, The Head), Art Parkinson (Say Nothing, Game of Thrones), Aoife Nic Ardghail, Seán Duggan (House of Guinness) and Tony Devlin (Say Nothing). Duggan plays Neilí, while Parkinson and Devlin appear as Aodh and Hugh.

The BBC says Crá Season 2 will arrive on BBC iPlayer in the UK this autumn, with exact transmission details still to be announced.

For American viewers, Season 1 is currently available on Acorn TV under the title Boglands. We haven't seen any official confirmation that Acorn TV will be picking up the second season (or when they might air it, if they do), but we'll be keeping an eye out for more updates. We'd be surprised if it aired somewhere else, but we never want to assume until we get confirmation.
