American fans of the original British Ghosts finally have a date for the return to Button House. Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, the feature film that reunited the cast and creators of the BBC comedy, will become in the US later this month. The film opened in British and Irish cinemas on October 23 and quickly reached No. 1 at the UK box office.
What Is the Original British Ghosts About?
The BBC sitcom begins when Alison Cooper unexpectedly inherits Button House, a large but crumbling country estate she and her husband Mike hope to turn into a hotel. After a near-death experience, Alison discovers that she can see and communicate with the assortment of ghosts trapped on the property. Each ghost comes from a different period in the house’s history, and much of the comedy comes from Alison and Mike attempting to build a normal life while sharing their home with people only Alison can see.
Created by Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, Ghosts ran for five seasons on the BBC before concluding with a Christmas special in 2023.
What Is Ghosts: The Possession of Button House About?
The film picks up after Alison and Mike have left Button House and plans are underway to transform the property into a hotel. The ghosts are adjusting to life without their living friends when protesters interfere with the construction project and create a new threat to the future of the house.
Their potential route back to Alison and Mike arrives in the form of Jack, a teenage ghost hunter who may have found a way for one of Button House’s residents to leave the grounds. That gives the ghosts a possible way to reach their old friends and help save the hotel project.
The movie runs approximately 97 minutes and was filmed at West Horsley Place in Surrey, the same historic property that served as Button House throughout the television series.
Which Ghosts Cast Members Return?
Charlotte Ritchie returns as Alison alongside Kiell Smith-Bynoe as Mike, while the show’s six creators reprise their familiar roles: Mathew Baynton as Thomas Thorne, Simon Farnaby as Julian Fawcett, Martha Howe-Douglas as Lady Fanny Button, Jim Howick as Pat Butcher, Laurence Rickard as Robin and Humphrey’s head, and Ben Willbond as the Captain.
Lolly Adefope also returns as Kitty, reuniting the principal original ensemble for the feature film. The project came together after the creative team had already chosen to bring the television series to a deliberate conclusion, but a new story idea persuaded them there was room for one more trip to Button House.
Who Made the Ghosts Movie?
Baynton, Farnaby, Howe-Douglas, Howick, Rickard and Willbond wrote the film and also serve as executive producers. Simon Hynd, whose previous credits include episodes of Ghosts, Motherland and There She Goes, directs.
The film is a Monumental production for BBC Film in association with BBC Studios. Lionsgate handled the UK theatrical release, while BBC Studios is involved in international distribution.
How Many Versions of Ghosts Are There?
The original British series has now grown into an international franchise (which is great news for the creators, considering British TV is known for paying relatively poorly compared to, say, American TV). The best-known remake for most is the CBS version, which relocates the premise to an inherited country estate in upstate New York and replaces the British ghosts with characters drawn from different periods of North American history.
Local versions have also been produced in France, Germany, Australia and Greece, while a Czech adaptation is also in development. The basic setup remains the same across the different versions, but each country populates its haunted house with characters drawn from its own history and culture.
The Australian version follows Kate and Sean as they inherit a country mansion occupied by ghosts representing different periods of Australian history. It debuted on Network 10 and Paramount+ in Australia and was later acquired by the BBC for British viewers.
When Can You Watch Ghosts: The Possession of Button House in the US?
Ghosts: The Possession of Button House will be available to rent or purchase digitally in the United States beginning November 21, 2026.
The movie will be offered through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango. This is a digital rental and purchase release rather than the film being added to a subscription streaming service, so unfortunately, you'll have to pay if you want to see it (but on the plus side, we won't have to wait forever to get access).
Need to catch up on the TV series? You can stream both the original and some of the adaptations below:
For now, the other versions haven't been translated and brought to US streaming services – but with any luck, that will happen eventually. Each country does a bit to make the series its own, and while it's definitely a sitcom above all, it does give you some fun cultural and historical insights seeing how different countries have adapted it.
