The Midwich Cuckoos: Village of the Damned

The Midwich Cuckoos: Village of the Damned

Based on the 1957 novel of the same name by John Wyndham, this is the latest of several adaptations. Set in the fictional English town of Midwich, the action kicks off with a mysterious event where everyone within a certain area of the town suddenly falls unconscious. When they awake, all the women of childbearing age find themselves inexplicably pregnant. These pregnancies develop at an accelerated rate, and the resulting children possess unusual abilities, including telepathy and mind control.

As the children grow, they demonstrate a collective intelligence and a disregard for human life, causing fear and suspicion among the townspeople.

Episodes will continue as follows:

  • November 7th: Episode 4, “Hide & Seek” – Whilst investigating Amrita's disappearance, Paul's own attachment to Nathan is challenged. Susannah tries to understand the cause of the children's violent instincts. The children now see Susannah as a threat and use their powers to neutralize.
  • November 14th: Episode 5, “Why Are You Lying?” – With Susannah ostracized, the children's hold on Midwich strengthens. When Paul awakens to the children's true nature, he pleads with Susannah to try to forge a truce with them. Meanwhile, Zoe and Sam are galvanized into action by another miracle.
  • November 21st: Episode 6, “Not An Ice Cream” – Two years later. The children go behind Susannah's back to express their desire to leave Midwich and Susannah suspects ulterior motives at work. Meanwhile, tragedy strikes one of the families. Paul and Susannah work together to uncover the truth.
  • November 28th: Episode 7, “Departure” – After more bloodshed, the children plan to leave. Susannah volunteers to go with them and strives to get Cassie to safety. It is evident now that they must be stopped. And there's no easy way out.

November 4th Premieres

Inspector Ellis premieres November 4th

Inspector Ellis (2024 Acorn TV Original)

DCI Ellis specialises in failing investigations. When a local force can't solve something, she comes in – often to great resistance. Sharon D. Clarke stars in the titular role.

Episodes will air as follows:

  • November 4th, Episode 1: “Hanmore” – When the body of 18-year-old Rowan Edwards is found in a car, partly submerged in a lake, DCI Ellis is called in by Assistant Chief Constable (ACC) Alison Leighton to take over this investigation and get results fast. Rowan’s mother was a Member of Parliament, so the press is all over it, and they need an arrest. Rowan’s girlfriend, Maggie, who was with him, has not been seen since. The current Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), Belmont, is less than impressed to have been shunted off the case, while DS Chet Harper, a keen detective in his early 30s, is assigned to help Inspector Ellis.
  • November 11th, Episode 2: “Callorwell” – Inspector Ellis (Sharon D Clarke, Showtrial, Lost Boys & Fairies, Rocketman), and DS Harper (Andrew Gower, The Winter King, Carnival Row, Outlander), arrive in Callorwell to investigate the disappearance of Jenny Lawler, a local detective. ACC Leighton needs Inspector Ellis on this case as the DCI of the station was recently suspended from duty after Jenny filed a sexual harassment claim against him. Jenny’s colleagues do not seem particularly worried about her disappearance, believing she left of her own free will – but Inspector Ellis smells that something is rotten within this force. And she is proven right when Jenny is found, murdered… while she was 14 weeks pregnant.
  • November 18th, Episode 3: “Brindleton” (FINALE) – Following the report of two missing honeymooners, Inspector Ellis and DS Harper are called to Brindleton to assist the overwhelmed local force. The disappearance has generated a huge response from the press and the public, but when a severed hand is found in the honeymooners’ camper van – it is clear that the pair have met with foul play.
